I have a 1997 chevy cavalier 2.2...this just started happening. I would be driving down a road...and if i slow down to a very low speed and hit the gas again to start going, my engine will sputter and come so close to stalling. This also happens when i am making a turn from a dead stop. When i hit the gas my engine will sputter and almost stall. Today on my way home from work i was at a stop light, the light turned green, so i hit the gas and my engine sputtered and it actually stalled this time. I have no idea what it is. Its not a cooling problem, i checked the fan, and put a new thermostat in the car last week. Its not the alternator or the battery, i checked them myself. I also replaced the fuel filter 2 days ago, and it still happens. Any help would be GREATLY appriciated.

maybe try replacing the distributor, and plugs and wires could be a good idea as well. But my guess is the distributor. Maybe fuel filter as welll just to complete the tune up.

I have the same problem with my 95, it's not the fuel pump, or fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, I've tried all of that.  No engine light comes on, the car just quits when it decides to quit.  I'm at my wits end.  Any real mechanics out there that might have a clue and it's not the obvious.

interesting. I was told the Z24 engines are hard to find and expensive if you do find one.
