the older 6.0 suck on gas but are fairly stout on towing. my friends 01 or 02 was terrible. im assuming because it was the first year for that motor.
i would love to have my friends 8.1 with the allison. that thing roles and gets better mpg than me.

I got a 07 with the 6.0 and love it. It has a lot more stuff then the 5.3 I had in the 03.  Wife says it feels like our Vette.  The variable valve timing, that's what I wanted,  gives it a lot of low end torque.  Average MPG is 14.5 for 5500 miles.  The 5.3 got 15.1 for the same kind of driving.  It is a lot quicker then the 6.0 in the 3/4 ton.  You also get the  M70 tranmission instead of the M30.  I would buy it again for sure.

I had a 2005 2500HD with the 6.0 & bought a 2007 6.0 the variable valve timing does the trick! 11.0MPH with 4:10 gears to 14.5 with 3:73's & it tows more! I love it.
