Because existing sources of auto reliability information left much to be desired, in late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research at TrueDelta.com. TrueDelta reports absolute stats like "trips to the shop" that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, so it's possible to provide reliability information on new models quickly. Also, any significant changes in a model's reliability become apparent quickly. Thanks to the help of dozens of forums, I'll already providing results for over 70 model / model years. But, for whatever reason, Chevrolet owners (and thus Chevrolets) are under-represented. I'd like to fix this. Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter. To encourage participation, panel members will receive full access to the results for free. For the details, and to sign up to help out: Auto reliability research

There are several companies that keep track of these stats (and more) on virtually every model of car made and they receive input from millions of consumers. J.D. Power and Consumer Reports just to name a couple. IMHO I think that the gap between the best and the worst (strictly from a reliability stand point) has closed so much so that except for that odd vehicle built Friday at 3:00PM just prior to the 3 day weekend there are damn few duds out there, I routinely see S10 and Astro vans with 400,000+ miles that are still on their original engine and transmissions, I also see Fords, Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia you name it that have stood up well beyond a normal life span. Reliability probably isn't (or shouldn’t be a primary) consideration for the average consumer who keeps a car 34 months. Let’s face it most of us driving nice vehicles such as Tahoe’s are funded well enough to purchase nearly anything we desire and we do, and we aint driving nothing that’s icky inside or developing noises or getting a little loose; which is what happens to several year old cars, these same cars may have 10 or more years left in them (just not with one of our asses in the seat).

CR receives data on 1.3 million cars, but JD Power's surveys usually have data on about 70,000, partly because they study one model year and partly because there's no need to have data on 7,000 2002 Camrys. Those are the only two current players in vehicle reliability research. Ane the methods of both are severely flawed. My main critiques: http://www.truedelta.com/pieces/shortcomings.php http://www.truedelta.com/pieces/jdpower.php If you have any questions after reading these (or any of the others you'll see listed in the sidebar) feel free to ask them.

I have been using CR for about 10 years. They are extremely reliable. The few times I have gone against their recommendations, I have paid dearly. Whatever their method is it works. I get a survey once a year from them, So I know their research is based off actual owners like myself.

I have no doubt they survey actual owners. Who doesn't? If I was surveying virtual owners I'd have a lot more data! Their results are generally accurate, but they can lead people to overestimate the differences between cars, anomalies do sometimes creep in, and they're slow. My methods will provide initial information on fall releases as early as February. They release this information in November. On average, my results are over ten months "fresher" than theirs. This has two benefits: 1. Learn about the reliability of new models while they're still new, not in their second model year 2. If and when you buy a used car, do you want to know how reliable it was a year ago, or how reliable it has been recently?

Consumer Reports does already provide results for the 2007 Tahoe and Yukon based on the previous survey, which covered the year through March 31, 2006. IIRC, the Tahoe and Yukon went on sale in February. People criticize JD Power for reporting reliability after only 90 days, but what few realize is that CR's reliability verdicts of 2006 cars are based on cars that have been on the road for about the same amount of time, on average. And for the 2007 Tahoe and Yukon they probably had at best one month of legitimate data, on average. In the case of the 2007 Honda Fit, which went on sale in April, they theoretically have fewer than zero months of data. So how did they provide a reliability verdict? Because over 100 people ignored the instructions to only respond for cars that were owned before March 31. At the same time, many people tell me they're only interested in reliability information based on three or more years of ownership. The obvious problem is that such data isn't possible on new models.

I'm now collecting data on the 2004 and 2007, and will add more years when enough owners of those years have signed up to participate.

Latest results here: TrueDelta Vehicle Reliability Survey results The next update will be in August, and at least some years of the Tahoe and Suburban will be included. The more owners that participate, the more solid these results will be.

More participants would still help a great deal. With the current number, the results will likely be asterisked and visible only to members, because of an insufficient sample. With the new Lambdas I already have over 100 owners signed up. I'd like to have a similar sample of GMT900 SUVs.
