I just bought a 2000 Z71.. Will somebody give me the steps in putting in 4X4.
Do you put your truck in Neutral before you put in 4X high or 4X low.
I see the N on the auto buttons.  How do you use that. There is no Neutral button just the N letter.

Seems it don't alway go into 4x H.. On my 92 the lights will come on on  the panal by the shifter. 2000 there are no lights light up no where.
How do you do it and how do you put it back.. I been playing with it. I just don't think I'm doing the steps right. I read in the book it reads dont put foot on the peddle when engageing??

I do have a Service 4X4 that does some on sometimes..  I turn truck off and it don't come back on.. May not come on for a month.. May be something wrong with it..  Someone told me to change fuse. I did change the 4x fuse but it still comes on..

Sounds stupid I know but I'ts not going smooth with it. May be something wrong on it.

Toby I have some answers for you. This problem is common. Your 4WD switch is bad it needs replaced. $50.00  online or $80.00 at the dealer. Installing is also a breeze. Just tilt the steering wheel down and slowly pull on the black panel toward you and the whole intrument panel will separate from the rest of the dash. Replace the switch and enjoy. Putting it in 4WD is very easy on these trucks. If you want 4 HI just push the button it will flash like 4 times and then go into 4 HI.
You can do this while still moving . // If you what 4 LO, then Stop, put the shifter in N and then push 4L, the lights will flash and  you will definatly hear and feel it go in. When you start the truck the 4WD lights should always flash.

I should also tell you that the N on the transfer case panel is pretty much just for if you have your truck towed by a tow truck. If you press 2HI and 4LO at the same time it will disengage the transfer case completly.

Must be my switch. When in 4xL or anything the lights don't flash.
Fact the light on 2H is not bright.  If I press it it will get strong but go dim when I let go.

I did look no ebay for a switch. Where else can I get if from. I did a google seach but nothing came up.
Thanks for your help
