I have 1999 Silverado 1500 5.3L Z71  128K miles and I am having fuel problems.  I was driving along then all of a sudden the truck loses power and slowly dies.  The truck will start fine but when you put on the gas it does nothing and then eventually dies from a lack of fuel.  Does the fuel pump need to be replaced or is it something else?

Thanks in Advance.

If the engine is not getting proper fuel delivery and pressure, it can be due to bad fuel pump, stopped up fuel filter, defective fuel pressure regulator, to name a few.  Start with getting the fuel pressure checked to see if it's really starving.  Then you can work on isolating the cause.  If the fuel filter has not been changed recently, it's a good place to start because it's the least expensive and easiest component to change and check.

yeah i agree with RonH. all you have to do it get a fuel pressure gauge and hook it up to the fuel rail. just remember to be carful when removing the gauge cause there is still gonna be fuel in it.

Well I replaced the fuel filter which helped a little, now for about the first 15 sec I can rev the truck but it still dies.  I turned the key on while I had the filter off and it spurted out some fuel but nothing more.  Now what should I do?

replace the fuel pump...we just had to do it on one of our shop trucks. an 01 2500hd with 115k. I took the truck home that night, went to work the next mornin and parked it...then went out to plow snow and it wouldnt run unless someone was banging on the tank with a hammer.

I have a spare for my 99 z71 5.3 in the garage...shes been hummin for soem time now
