I am building up a GM 383 stroker that I pulled out of an early '70s chevelle. A friend of mine would like to buy it to put it in a 1981 Monte Carlo. Not sure what motor or transmission he has. I know we can get the engine to fit with a mounting kit but wondering if it will bolt up to the transmission without any problems. Thank you...

the trans needs to be either beefed up or changed to a 350t and the rear has to be swapped, the grand national has a direct fit and is stronger than original. if you have seirious power like over 450 hp you will need a 9" ford they make them to fit right in for a mere 2-3 grand but worth it for the reliability.also if you won't be using the a/c they make a heater box for heat only cars to give you mopre space to work on the car.

First of all, GM GEN I Small blocks are the same from 1955-1985. The differences are in the heads, intake, valve cover, and the 81+ has EGR provisions. Second, the transmission will bolt right up. Install a higher stall speed converter, yes it is recomended to beef up the trans. As far as the rear axle, I built a 383 11.5:1 compressio ratio engine putting out 510 HP and my 8.5" ring and pinion is holding together fine. I did however put Richmond gears in the back with an Aburn LSD and Superior axles. If you're going to swap out the rear end, put in a GM 10 bolt. That is set up for some major power. Do you know the HP and torque specs? Maybe I can help you with the rear end dilema
