Hi, I am new here.  I did a  search  and didnt come up with any info yet.  I have a 97 suburban LS model.  I was wondering if there is a way to tell if it is equiped with keyless remote entry.  as when i got the vehicle it DID NOT come with a  remote.  Only thing I know about this  is when I start up the engine, all  the doors will lock.  They will unlock  as soon as I turn it off.

The receiver for the keyless remote is burried in the steering column support and difficult to find without a picture or a diagram of its location.  You can test for it by putting it into programming mode.

On the ODBII data port connector, just under or to the left of the steering wheel at the bottom of the dash, the top row of contacts are, from left to right as you look at it, number 1 through 8.  Bend a small paperclip or something similar to make a jumper and short across terminals 4 & 8.  Be sure you get the right ones. The doors will cycle (lock and then unlock) as the receiver enters programming mode.

To program the remote key fob, with the jumper in place, hold down on the lock and the unlock buttons of the remote at the same time until the door locks cycle again.  When it cycles, the remote is programmed.  You can do this with up to 4 remotes.  Then remove the jumper and it's done.

If you bought your Suburban from a dealer, you might check with them for a remote.  I bought mine from a dealer and it did not have a remote fob.  I checked with them later and they had a box with about 100 various remotes.   I found 2 that worked and they just gave them to me.

Good luck

Ok cool  I will try that tomorrow before the game.  NOw  IF  that works, Id obviously need a  remote.  IS the dealership  a  good place to go  or are they expensive?

Check places like eBay and your local salvage yards first, GM dealership as a last resort because of price.  I think your remote will be same as for my 1998 model.  GM part number is 16245100-29.  It's a 3 button remote with a lock and unlock button, and a third button which may have the words rear2x or a picture of a car with the truck up.

Take a look at you SPID label most likely in your glovebox.  Its a label with codes that lists all features and options on your vehicle.
