kiki_v -> technical support (1/31/2006 3:22:57 PM)

Since a week i've got a Chevrolet Suburban of 1997. Yesterday when i drove the car a light with the notice 'check gages' lit up. I'm a complete blank when it comes to technical stuff with cars. Is there anyone who can tell me what i have to do plz? Not alot of mechanics here are capable to figure it out. I'm not in the states,i'm in Belgium Europe you see. I hope anyone can give me a clue what it is,so i can see if the mechanics can deal with it.
Thanks already

Kiki

I would say swing by autozone and get em to check what code it is. Since you're in belgium I would have to say go see if you can rent or purchase one. Froogle has em around 120US so thats like 97 Euros

Good luck man

You can check the code of the check engine light by your self. What you want to do is get a small peice of wire and look under the steering column. There is a connector that you will insert that wire into. You are going to put the wire in the A and B terminal with the key in the OFF postion. These are the top two positions on the right of the connector. Make sure you strip the ends of the wire. Anyway, with the wire in the contacts, turn the key to the ACC position, and make sure you do not start it. Once you do this the check eninge light will flash a code of 12. One flash followed by two flashes. The next set of flashes will be the error code that is set. One thing to keep in mind is that you may have more than one code. Wait unitl the 12 code starts over and then you have all the error codes. When you are done with retrieving the error code(s), then turn the key to the OFF position and remove the wire.

As for the error code, you can look up the OBD 1 errors codes on the internet or post it here to see what the possible fix might be. I will try to help you out. I hope this helps you out.

Here is the connector:
