JUST BOUGHT A 97 GMC LS WITH THE 4.3 V.6.  ONLY HAS 65,000 MILES ON IT.  THE ABS LIGHT IS ON AND SEEMS TO BE FINE EXCEPT THIS ONE TIME WHEN I GOT ON THE BRAKES HARD.  IT FELT AND SOUNDED FUNNY. IS THIS A COMMON THING.  ALSO THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR WORKS BUT SOMETHIMES THE BLADES STOP WHERE EVER THEY WANT TO.  ANY IDEAS?

if your abs light is on then your abs is not working, your brakes will still work fine but they won't be abs.  This means you will be able to lock up your brakes so be careful.

With regards to the ABS you should get that checked by someone professional. If you slam on the brakes and they lock up you know for sure the ABS is not working. I would say the switch is going on the wipers and if you don't want to end up with it pouring down rain and no wipers I would suggest you get this fixed. I don't think it is the windshield wiper motor.

If you slam on the brakes does it make a funny sound and feels like the brake pedal keeps pushing back? This is happening to me also. I found out it is just the ABS keeping the brakes from locking up. It has only happened to me when there is snow on the ground, so it may be due to cold weather, nothing is wrong.

you need a new windshield wiper modulator(I think that's the name of it), it's about $50 and really easy to install.

As far as the ABS, the light can be checked with a special computer.  It is not the same as an OBDII scanner.  (the computer that plugs into the port under the dash.)  The funny sound is prolly the ABS pump trying to kick in.  Check the fluid and make sure that it is still full.
