I am going to be rebuilding my 89 gmc stepside and i am at a loss for what kind of engine i should put in it. i was considering a 383 but then ive also got lots of room for a bbc. any imput would be nice. im lookin for this truck to be a steet and strip kinda project. id like around 500hp+.

Well, I think a lot of it depends on what's available for a reasonable price in your area. Where I am, they want a fortune for big block engines, but in some areas I've seen them pretty cheap (even used or cores). THere's a lot of trucks in my area, so finding a core or running 400 small block is not that hard.. Toss on a set of aftermarket heads, intake and cam, and you're good to go. The heads will cost about the most.
