Don't throw your truck out with a bad key fob. Learn how to resolve a malfunctioning key fob using the following helpful steps.

By Charlie Gaston - June 2, 2015

This article applies to the Chevrolet Silverado GMT800, GMT900, and K2XX (1999-Present).

You've pressed the buttons to open the doors and sound the alarm to your Chevrolet Silverado, but there's still no action. There are a number of reasons why your key fob is not working. The key fob might be damaged, malfunctioning, or in need of additional programming. Unlike a valet key, which inserts directly into your ignition and does not require a motherboard to operate, a fob is a lot more complex. This security hardware device allows you to control your vehicle and trunk without needing to engage the locks manually. All you have to do is press the button you need, and the authentication code inside will do the rest. If your fob is not working, here is a rundown of the likely culprits and the steps you can take to fix the problem.

Materials Needed

  • Key fob
  • Fresh batteries
  • Microfiber cloth or lint-free cloth

Step 1 – Troubleshoot your key fob

The connections might need to be cleaned.

There are a few steps you'll need to take to troubleshoot your key fob. It is recommended following the order outlined below.

  • Check your batteries.
  • Open the key fob, and gently clean all of the points using a clean microfiber cloth or lint-free cloth. Do not use water or a liquid cleanser.
  • Wipe away any moisture that you see around the rubber buttons or hidden inside of the grooves.
  • Check that all of the points are making proper contact. You may need a new rubber insert.
  • If cleaning your fob does not resolve the problem, you may need to purchase a replacement.
  • New and used replacement fobs are available online; however, each fob will need to be programmed to work with your truck.

Pro Tip

Move slowly as you wipe the contacts free of debris and dirt to avoid damaging any soldered items.

Step 2 – Make sure your fey fob is properly synced

It might not be receiving a signal.

Before getting started, make sure you have the correct key fob. The FCC ID# and GM# must match in order for your fob to operate your truck.

  • Program your key fob per your owner's manual. You must program each individual key fob for them to work.
  • Standing next to your truck (on the driver's side door), press the "lock" and "unlock" buttons on your key fob simultaneously. The "lock" and "unlock" buttons must be pressed at the same time for the synchronization process to work.
  • Hold it for seven seconds.
  • Contact your local GM dealership if the synchronization process does not work after at least three attempts.

Pro Tip

If the synchronization process does not work the first time around, it is recommended trying for a second time before moving on.

Step 3 – Have dealer code your key fobs

Unfortunately, only your local GM dealer can code your key fob(s).

Programming the code to your key fob should only require a short visit to your local GM dealership; however, you will want to make a service appointment in advance.

  • Bring your new set of key fobs with you to your service appointment.
  • If your old fob is damaged, you can purchase a new or used one online.
  • Make sure to put in a fresh set of batteries.
  • You might need to leave your vehicle at the dealership for about an hour or so, depending on how busy the service technician is at the time of your appointment.
  • Expect to pay between $40 and $100. There shouldn't be any extra costs.
  • Test your key fob before leaving by pressing the buttons to open your vehicle doors as well as trunk, and don't forget to test the alarm.
