It was a high milage Saturn. My son was driving his friend's car one rainy night and lost control (the tires had next to no tread) in our subdivision. The airbags deployed and they both walked away from this one. No tickets were issued even though it happened after curfew.
The parents of his friend were not as upsent as we might think. The reason for the gal with the bucks and big grin is that oddly they needed money from the insurance more than they wanted the car! The got about $3000 for it since it would have cost $11000 to repair. We were a bit concerned, to say the least, that they would come after us legally... but they didn't for the above reason. With bald tires, maybe we could have counter-sued, but it never came to that. We were all glad that the boys came out of this alive and to this day, ok.
As I wrote, when car meets tree.

I can vouch for what that's like...
Last thanksgiving eve I slammed into a telephone pole at around 3 am...I fell asleep behind the wheel, but luckly I didn't hit the tree dead-on. The front right corner of the truck caught the tree and I kind of ricocheted off the pole and ended up in corn fields. the top part of the telephone pole somehow broke off and landed into the corn field as well, starting a huge flame. Then about 5 months later I got a bill for $5800 from the electric company. What a night I tell ya....
