i have a 1985 caprice with a 350 in it. i just got done doing a head
gasket on it and new lifters, pushrods, and rocker arms and valve
seals. i put it all back together and it started right up. but when you
hook a timing light up to it, it will show up on the timing marks
really advanced like off the scale about an inch or so, and if you try
to get it with in the scale it will just bog down and the motor will
die. and then when
you shift it into drive it will bog down. any one have any ideas? some
people at work told me the distributor could be off a tooth. another
person said the timing chain might have jumped or stretched out. any
ideas will be very helpful.

I would start with the distributor first since it is an easier job. Remove it set eng. to #1 TDC and drop in the distributor making sure when it is fully seated the rotor is pointing to #1 on the cap!
