Tahoe 07 Navigation Problem

We recently purchased a new Tahoe with all the bells and whistles.  After playing around with the navigation system I came to realize that the turn by turn directions that I thought would be played via the speakers was not working.  So basically while using the navigation system you must always look at the display to determine your next move.  I have read the manual and seen where an option exists in the sound settings for voice prompts.  This option is called turn by turn response I believe.  Well the feature was activated correctly on this menu but still no sound.  I have spoke briefly with the service manager and he stated that the turn by turn directions is a function of the onstar system.  I found that hard to believe since the only mention of directions on onstar is when speaking to a live agent for directions.  So I must assume that the Navigation option does not pertain to the onstar system.  Does anyone have any insight?  Or should I just start the process of going to the next person in line at the dealership?

Thanks
Joe
I also failed to mention that when starting the navigation system on a route it does say "please obey traffic laws" as well as "Please proceed to the location starting point on the navigation system and then route directions will begin".  I know I quoted but they the words might not be exact.

Well since you purchased it new, you should have OnStar anyway.  Not that I think that has anything to do with the voice prompts from the nav system.  I think you can upgrade OnStar to give turn-by-turn directions tho.  You can either try another dealership or call the help line @ 800.222.1020.

you should be able to choose "start guidance" and you will get the turn by turn voice prompts. There is also a volume control in one of the menus for the volume of the voice prompt specifically...take a look there perhaps.

Yes I do have the onstar but simply think that the two are unrelated.  The only directions that onstar offer per the documentation that I have received from the dealership is to get step by step directions from an agent.

When starting the guidance the system says to proceed to the route that is displayed on the navigation and then the directions will begin.  When reaching the destination the system comes back on and says you have reached your destination.  So basically it tells when I set it to go and when I reach but nothing in the middle.  The turn by turn voice option is already set to yes.  The navigation software seems to be 1.10.  I hoping that that is the problem because so far the dealership has not been much help.

Thanks for the number.  I will call it if nothing else comes from this.

Thanks again

onstar now offers turn-by-turn directions upon request...basically, you pay a yearly fee which allows you to contact onstar, provide them with a destination addres, they will "download" instructions to your vehicle, which will provide you turn-by-turn prompts until you reach your destination.  This is completely seperate from the on-board nav.  hope this helps

Let's drop the OnStar references out of this thread just to avoid confusion.  The point of this thread is about the fact that janracals navigation voice prompt is not working.  Just staying on the subject.

I would think to check the navigation voice prompt volume first as ty_1 suggested.  I do know that this volume control is sensitive.  I turned mine all the way up one time thinking that it was too low, and it damn near blew my head off.  The trick I found out is to set the volume with the radio's speakers down low to get the right level.

Mine does the exact same thing by the way, but I think it's because it doesn't have the VSS hooked up.  ????  Not too sure on that on though.

I had the same problem as janracals when I installed the factory nav in my 07 LT3. My system would start and end the route guidance with voice prompts but would not give any prompts in the middle of the route and would not redirect if I got off track. As soon as I wired the VSS All the bells and whistles turned on and the prompts started working along with the reroute. If your unit was factory installed have the dealer make sure the green/white wire has a good connection.

Hey Joe - We had the exact same problem you are having.  We went on vacation and had no voice prompt at all.  It only worked briefly for about 5 min while we were in Seattle so we had a taste of what it was supposed to do.  After we got back, we took it into the dealer and they ended up replacing the whole radio/nav unit.  I would take Jritchey's advice first and have them check the green/white vss wire and then pursue the replacement.  If they keep saying that you should have onstar turn by turn directions, just pull out another hoe with nav and show them how it is supposed to work!!  Good Luck.

Thanks for all the advice.  I will setup an appointment with the dealership and see how it goes.

Thanks again

Definitely looks like a VSS issue.

Here is what I noticed before/after I hooked up the VSS wire:

Before:   You input a destination, you get the fuscia colored route drawn up on the nav map, and a voice prompt that tells you something like "proceed to your route & navigation will begin".   Then thats all you get - no turn by turn or proximity ("proceed for approximately X miles") updates.  When you finally arrive at the destination I did get a voice prompt to that effect.

After:  Turn by turn voice prompts immediately commence as well as proximity updates (distance to next action "countdown" bar).  Also, I noticed that instead of your position updating ~ every 5 seconds, once the VSS was connceted the cursor was moving about every 2 seconds.

Boy oh boy did I have this same problem. From day 1 that I took delivery it did not work "as designed".......Sometimes it would start giving me the voice commands then all of a sudden, the voice prompts would start, even though the display would still show the turn by turn mapping. I have the link to my problem and how it was resolved here:

I think you will see I had to make several trips to the dealership. My service tech new I had the problem but because there was "no" error code, GM said there was no problem. But thru the help of GM Customer service and my GM tech, problem solved....new NAV radio.

Definitely a VSS issue!  I just upgraded my 07 Avalanche to the GM Nav unit and have been playing around with the VSS cable ( I thought if I disconnected it, I would be able to "fool" the truck into thinking it was at a stoplight...), so I could enter an address or scroll the XM cats.  No the case..Just in case you were wondering, the features go grey...I guess Denso and GM thought of everything...If it's a new truck, bring it back to the dealer and tell them to investigate the VSS connection!

Just like konasmrz mentions below in his before and after explanation, I can replicate this EXACT situation, when I unplug or plug in the VSS connector in the back of the nav unit.  Onstar has nothing to do with this!
