I have a 1986 GMC suburban with a 350 in it. I broke the connecting rod in it and it took a chunk out of the block. I bought a 305 from a 79 camaro. I am friends with a mechanic teacher from a high school and he got the students to work on it. What he told me was that the exhaust manifold does not fit and the oil dipstick is on the opposite side. The mechanic teacher went to a local shop to get more info about these Suburban and they told him that the 86 suburban had a special carburated motor. Shouldnt any 305 or 350 engine fit right in? If not then when do you guys recomend that I should get as a replacement. thanks

as far as the dipstick being on oppisite sides why would that matter and u could get a set of 305 exhaust manifolds and replace the ones off the 350

The 86 Suburban 350ci engine uses a electronic carburetor and engine contols, the 1979 motor will not have all the ports available to make this an ideal substitute, another reason to forego the 305ci Camaro motor is lack of power, the car 305ci engine is cam'd to move a light weight car not a heavy Suburban.

Appropriate 350ci long-blocks for your 86 Suburban are readily available for very reasonable prices.

I called a few places in town and they say that the 1986 350ci is very hard to find. The only thing I found is a 85 chevy complete running truck with a 350. They wants $650 for the whole truck. Would this work for my application?
