I have a 99 chevrolet silverado 2500.  I noticed yesterday when I shift it into drive and power forward there is a slight clunking noise.  I think the noise is coming from the rear of the vehicle indicating a u joint possible failure but it seems like the noise may even be close to the tranny.  It is hard to tell even with the window down.  There is definitely something not right and was wondering if someone has enountered a similar problem.  The truck has 145k on it.  THx

I think that is normal, I have had close to 10 chevy and gmc trucks, some new and some used and all of them did that. I know exactly what you are talking about, it almost sounds like axle wrap, like on the older fords.

ive noticed this noise also on my 02' Z71 1500 with 50,000m on it...i put my truck on the lift at my school, got under it, spun my drifeshaft by hand and it sounded like it was coming from the transfercase...is your truck 4wd? if so i would look there for that noise if u have access to a lift

The clunk noise that you hear does not usually indicate a problem it is likely caused by a little play between the transfer case output shaft and the driveshaft slip-yoke, however GM has new superseded and updated nickel-plated slip yoke/u-joint assembly that can be installed, this replacement part will normally cure the clunk noise.
