I have a 79 Monte Carlo with a 3.3.
The starter solenoid was doing the click of death, and finally died.
I replaced the starter, about a week later due to other things going on.
After replacing the starter i turned the key, click, click. Hmm dead battery probably.
I jumped it, and it started right up. I let it run for about a hr, shut it off and tried to start it, nothing.
Jumped it again, it was dark, so i drove it around for a hr or so, with the lights and the heater on low, all seemed good, lights were bright and didnt dim when i hit the brakes.
Got back, shut it off and tried to start it, nothing. maybe a click. Jumped it and it started right up.
The next day i took the battery out and charged it for 2 hrs, on a 10 amp charge.
Put the battery back in, tried starting again, just clicks.
The interior lights are normal when you open the door, when you turn the key the lights dim.
Also when you turn the key, the Gen, oil and other idiot lights work, but the solenoid just clicks.
Any body have any ideas?

Good morning! Yep, sounds very familiar. My 99 Monte Carlo is in the shop as I'm sitting here. My anti-theft system is locked and the car according to the dealership "Thinks it being stolen" LOL.....crazy I know, cause I totally had to laugh at that one. Worst case senario they gave was the computer and anti-theft needs replaced or minor senario of damaged key or re-set of anti-theft system and computer. Frustrating I know. I'll let ya know how mine turns out. I wish you the best with you issues as well.

Put a new battery in it. Your engine runs off alternator voltage when running, the battery is just a voltage reservoir. Thats why it seems nothing is wrong when running. Your voltage gauge or light only indicates if the alternator is charging or not, which is seems to be fine.
