At the present time I do not want to afford an in dash NAV / GPS system for my 07 Tahoe but am considering a portable such as a Garmin or Magellen type. Any suggestions on units to look at with a budget of around $500.00?
Thanks for your suggestions!

I have a Garmin StreetPilot 2720 that works very very well.
Pricing is $399 at Costco right now.
I paid about $800 when I bought mine over a year ago.

I just purchased a Garmin c330 from bestbuy -- matched Walmarts online price of $268.00
Nice, basic, easy to use unit..

I second the Garmin Streetpilot 2720. I bought mine last year and it's been a great investment. The enhanced text-to-speech beats all other GPS units -- names of streets and highways are actually announced, not just the distance to the next turn. Updating the software is a piece of cake via USB connection to your computer. I've also done side-by-side comparison against the Hertz Neverlost GPS, which is based on Magellan software, and my Garmin was far superior, in terms of ease of use, accuracy, etc. After success with the 2720, I also bought one for my folks.
