I've often been asked if you should leave your computer turned on during the night. I now have the answer as to what happens to your computer while it is unattended during the night while you sleep.

the page comes up as not found. I turn off my comp at night because its loud, nothing happens to your comp at night, unless you have wireless and its uncripted (meaning that other people who have wireless can get on your internet).
its better for your comp to "rest" at night so that i can cool down and the hard drives can function correctly when you turn it on in the morning.

Technically (and I'm guilty of not following this), and mainly for safety reasons, you should turn it off if its not going to be used for a few hours. A buddy of mine found out the hard way... his house burnt down due to battery failure on his mother-in-laws toshiba sattelite laptop. The battery overheated, caught the machine on fire and the fire propogated from there. Lost the entire house (approx. 4,000 sq.ft.) and the majority of his family's stuff. I've NEVER had an issue with my laptop and I used to leave it on all night for years. I now try to remember to turn it off. Just not worth the risk!

The more times you shut your computer on and off the easier it is to break the connections in the monitor. Thats why most screens will not last more than a year if you shut your computer on and off at night. Because the heating up and cooling down will work the solder joints loose and the next thing you know is that you screen wont turn on the next morning.
