I have a 97 Cavalier Z24 that will stall when accelerating from a stop but only after it is warmed up. It will not restart until it has sat for awhile. When trying to restart the car right away it feels as though it is lurching some like the transmission may be slightly engaged. I'm thinking fuel filter or fuel pump but was looking for other suggestions before I start to throw money at it.

Well nobody here had the answer so I had to find it on my own. It was the crank sensor. $20 part.

I have the exact same problem to a tee with my 95 Z24 cavalier. Already changed the fuel filter and fuel pump, no dice, still have the same problem. How did you decide it was a crank sensor. My mechanic could not figure out what was going on. I have not yet fixed the problem.

There are a limited number of things that can actually cause this. It acted like it wasn't getting any spark. The crank sensor will get hot then just quit. The computer doesn't pick this up which is why there isn't an error code. For around $20 and a half hour to hour of time you can check this out. Plus, if your car has a lot of miles on it the sensor could stand to be replaced anyway.

I took it to the chevy dealership here and told him to check the crank sensor. He looked at me like I was nuts. He didn't write anything down and said he'd call me on Wednesday. I'll see what he says, if they did not check that I will make sure they do before I pick it up. Thanks for the tip.

It didn't show up on the diagnostics when I had them done. The dealership told me it was the Ignition Control Module but when I replaced it that didn't do the trick.
i have a 2000 that's doing about the same thing, though it's usually if i'm on the highway doing between 65-75 mph. not when i accellerate from a stop. noticed the oil light and battery light coming on after the car stalls, but the oil's fine. hoping it might be a weak battery.

My 95 continues to have the same problem. Chevy dealer put in a new computer PCM, didn't work, $500.00, then a new fuel filter, the old one was ten days old, fuel pump, the old one was 3 months old, then they told me they changed some sort of spring. The car doesn't stop now, but it still lurches like it's starved for fuel. They said they checked the crank sensor and no problem. I'm at about $1,000.00 now and problem not totally solved.
turns out mine was a bad fuel pump. car was still under warranty so they replaced it for nothing and it runs fine now.
