87 Cavalier shifter knob removal

Is there a trick to getting the knob off?

I Just purchased a 1987 Cavalier Station Wagon to use as a work vehicle while I try to sell my 95 tahoe 4x4 (good luck...right?)

Anyway, the shifter button is not pushing down the release mechanism far enough to be able to shift it.  I cant figure out how to get the shifter knob off.  There is a slot in the front that looks like a release pin for the knob but it wont slide in when pushed with a screw driver. 

Any help is appreciated.

There is a little c shaped clip and you can pull it out with a pic or a small screwdriver. Once the clip is out the shifter knob should just pull off.
