'85 s10 tahoe 4x4 backup lights

I've been trouble shooting my back-up lights on my '85 s10 tahoe, its a 2.8L 4x4 auto, 700r4. I can't seem to figure out why they aren't working. Bulbs were new, looked like never used when I bought last year, recently started trying to figure out why not workin. Anybody know if the switch is in the column or on the trans? I'm about to dig into the column (even though I really don't want to right now) to see if it is in there. Any help appreciated.
