4.3 clutch

My 1994 full size pickup has the 4.3 and a manual transmission, It is a 4 wheel drive with slightly oversize tires, First gear is too low and second is too high to start off in. My clutch only lasts 35,000 miles. Could I put a larger clutch,and pressure plate from a V8 in it ? What all will I need? thanks.

Actually the transmission, clutch, flywheel, etc on a 4.3 is already the same as the V8's.  I have a 1990 full size 5-speed 4x4 that I swapped from the 4.3 to an early model 350 small block.  The only thing I had to do was move the motor mounts forward on the frame (the necessary bolts holes are already there).  The clutch/pressure plate/flywheel was the same and I haven't had any problems with the more powerful engine (approx 325hp).  I even used the water pump, all accessories including A/C AND the "starter" from the 4.3 on the 350.
 
Technically, 1st gear isn't too low to take off in.  Even if you shift before you hit 10mph.  (mine is the same way) Clutch wear is caused primarily during take-off.  The lower the gear the better. If you take off in 1st gear the clutch should last 100,000 or more under normal driving conditions.
 
Secondly, when you replace the clutch plate you should replace everything including the pressure plate and throw-out bearing.  Check the hydraulic cylinder as well.  If your plate isn't fully disengaging and you tend to sit at the stop light holding the clutch in (instead of putting the tranny in neutral and letting the clutch out as you should do) it could burn the plate.  If you've already done this and your clutch is still failing then more than likely you need to have the flywheel "surfaced".
