I'm installing a 4.5" lift with 33" tires. I have 20" factory rims and was wondering if I have to stick with a 20" rim or can I switch to a 17" or 18" rim.. I'm hearing different stories.. ANy input would be appreciated.

I don't have any personal experience with this, but I wouldn't see why you couldn't go to a smaller rim. If the argument for not changing to a smaller rim is because of the speedometer differences, then that point is moot simply because you are already planning on putting on bigger tires anyway. I'm not sure if you can get a repro to solve the speedo difference or if it's a function of a speedo gear (like on my Vette).
The point is, as long as the offset and lug pattern is correct, there shouldn't be any problems.
