My 2003 chevy Z71 has a light on the instrument cluster. Its the engine symbol. I have disconnected the battery to see if it will clear . It does not clear. What would cause the engine light to come on? It starts fine and runs fine.

It's the check engine light ( CEL) there's a hundred problems that cause the light.
The ECU stores these problems go somewhere to have the codes read. Then you'll have an idea where to begin... also buy a repair manual.
