The blower motor will not effect the cooling of the engine in your car. If the rattle is constant I would think the squirrel cage has come loose from the blower motor.
Right now (maybe after a second pot of coffee) I don't remember where the blower motor was located in a 2001 Imp but I'm pretty sure theres a component locator section at the
www.autozone.com web site. Jo.

the blower motor only working on high sounds like it's the blower motor resister and check the resistor connector to see if it's burnt up. we have alot of problems with those.

I agree there is a possibility of the resistor or the wiring being burnt would make it only work on high but having the rattle either sounds like something fell down the defroster ducts or the fan is falling apart.
I've seen both happen especially during the coldest weather. If the fan does come loose or break it takes full power to turn it over and then makes its "rattle".

u could also have an actuator problem with the rattle popping noise. binding up and not adjusting from floor to vent. etc
