I have a 2001 Malibu with a V6 with 107K miles.  Everytime after starting the engine knocks very loudly until it is at normal operating temp then it goes away almost completely.  It drives fine, has plenty of power, not hesitation...all that good stuff, its just the noise is annoying and i feel it is going to break down very soon.  Is this a common problem for this vehicle?  Is this a sign of a top end rebuild?  Please give comments and suggestions on what to do. i am mechanically inclined, but do not know everything about engines, by any means, so any ideas will help.   Thanks.

I have yet to hear an older MAlibu with a 3.4 or 3.1 that dont knock.....well maybe an exageration but lots do....prolly a lifter,  make sure the oil is good and the head gasket is not leaking....

The oil is good and changed regularly.  I know the head gasket isn't blown.  what is the best way to check if it is leaking?  Now if it is a lifter... is this something i should be concerned with?  Will it cause any damage later?  Can't you adjust those?

Thanks

If it's knocking when you first start up and quiets down ... it's the dreaded crappy piston slap commonly found with these vehicles.
Been running mine that way for 6 1/2 noisey years.

will it lead to any other problems that will cost more than taking care of it now?  I guess its good to know you've been fine for that long.  i suppose this ones been doing it for a good 2 or so (that i know of cause its my girlfriends car)

Short of tearing down the motor to rework the pistons .... I would probably run it as is ... unfortunately it sounds like crap .
