Hi everyone-

I am new to the forum today and wanted to say that I am happy to find such a great resource.
I am not sure if this is the right place to post my question, but I hope so.

I have a 1995 Chevy Tahoe with 53,000 miles. I bought it two years ago with 16,000 original miles. Since then i have done all the normal maintenance (oil and fluid changes, brakes, tuneup, etc). Today, I was on the highway driving about 65 mph...when all of the sudden this grinding/rubbing noise started to come from the engine compartment/front end area. I thought I had a right front flat so I pulled over. Much to my surprise....I did not have a flat. Once I got back in the car, I noticed the grinding/rubbing noise again until I got up to about 15 miles an hour and then it seemed to go away. When I was decelerating for a stop light, it came back again around 10-15 miles an hour.

I checked my oil pressure (seems normal), checked my engine temperature (normal), checked my oil level (normal) and checked my trans fluid (level was normal and smelled normal). I also tried shifting into different gears.....the noise continued in drive, third....but seemed to not be as noticeable in first or second.

Any suggestions???

sorry, I can't help but the Tahoe section is very busy and your problem may get more attention there.

you said you were shifting gears right ..... so i take it you have a standard trans ????
if you do sounds like the thro-out bearing

Actually it is an automatic. In order to see what the problem may or may not be....I tried driving in some of the other gears.

Anyway....I took it to the shop this morning. They just called and said i have a blown transmission.....something about the planetary gear giving way. $2300 to rebuild with a 12 month warranty.

I rebuild mine for the same price.
The problem was the gear sun...after 115000 miles.
Don't forget to request smooth operation....

I had Mine rebuilt on My 4x4 Tahoe for $1400 with same warranty, so call around. Seems a bit pricy to me.

Costly indeed. I also don't trust rebuild shops that much as the warranty they give does not necessarily ensure that the transmission will not break. They just mean to tell you that the dealer will take care of your vehicle in case it will break. Also rebuilt transmission doesn't last too long either, as what I know in most cases. (don't mean to sound so pessimistic though)
