Our brand new 07 has puffy clouds in the Gold Mist paint, went to the dealer and they sent us to a GM paint shop where we were informed "Yep been seeing a bunch of these lately"
I am kind of afraid of a complete repaint on a new car, but the shop is telling me it will be much better than the factory..
Any thoughts?

So far this hasn't been much of an issue, normally when the paint is cloudy it is due to moisture accumulating between the plastic protective film and the paint during shipping.
Applying heat from a blow dryer or heat gun usually removes the cloudy appearance, if this is the root cause.

So is that what the paint shop will do and then act like they repainted the car???????????????????????

I think if it was moisture from shipping/protective film that our HOT Arizona sun would have addressed the issue over the past few weeks.

But i do appreciate your reply it is very logical

Don't think that I accused anybody of being a dishonest.
First you ask me if your local dealer is a thief and then you tell me why it's impossible for them to be. hmmmm.....

Enjoy your new paint job.

I never met to question your answer in the wrong way and I totally apoligze if I offended you in any way. I am only asking for advise on a subject that I have limited knowledge.

i own a black tahoe 07 lt3 as well and i as well have some clouds under the paint and i can see the sand papper swirls under the black paint i showed it to my sales person and they told me to take it to service and that they more than likely send it out to get painted
but its a 48000.00 dollar suv and once they paint something its never the same i was wonderring of there is anything we could do other than haveing it painted i personaly thought they should of replaced the whole vehicle but then i went to see other tahoes on the lot and they were all the same in the same spots me and the sales person couldnt believe it so im here just waiting for a recall or something on the paint i dont know i love my tahoe that i dont even srub it to wash it i run it through a touch free carwash that come out pricy at $6. a wash and dries it very good so what do we do ?????

The shop also has a black Tahoe in for complete warranty repaint...We really do not want to have it done on our new 07,but common sense tells me to have them pay for the complete repaint now and not to fight them later...

Whats the warranty on the paint?

Ive got a couple of bubbles in the paint, they are very small and come up to a point(like a hershey kiss). Im not to worried about it as its on the roof, but if it pops then I would be angry as rust would start to set in...

Where are these markings on the complete vehicle repaints? I dont think I have any, however i am not sure what and where i should be looking on my tahoe.

It is white, so no worries abour swirl marks. Had black vehicles for 10 years, NO MORE. Only white, silver, or gold! Dam swirls, scratches, nicks, and dings on black paint drove me nuts. I am a perfectionist and i didnt even want to drive my black vehicles because i would just have to wash them again every time I drove it.

Thing about it is that they will tape everything, leaving the possibility for painted moldings, things that shouldn't be painted,
they won't pull the roof rack off etc
FWIW, I'd trade that sucker as soon as I could

Well no repaint...The GM rep inspected the car in the rain and decided the Tahoe has " Normal characteristics of a GM paint job".........Well to say the least I hope this is not normal....He then went on to tell me that they had the same issue with the Cadilliac gold/white paint ................"we will refer this to engineering and get back to you"...WTF...kind of answer is that...I guess we will wait till we get the engineering response and decide our next step...his last statement was " We might have to decide not to paint this color next year"
GO GM GO...kinda like Run Forest Run

I haven't found any defects but I've never seen orange peel like this before. This is about the worst factory paint job I've ever owned. When I wax it, it looks good from a distance but man is it awful up close, at any angle.

Why don't you shoot me your VIN or case # and I'll look into this for you, GM is normally very generous in offering paint repairs, they will even cover damage from things such as tree-sap or acid rain within the first 12 months of ownership.

What I think is most likely the issue that are describing here is that there are a couple of colors (51U Gold Mist Metallic being one of them) that use a special process to align the micro-fine metallic flakes suspended within the paint as it is applied to give the finish greater depth and a striking appeal under bright lighting conditions. The paint most likely looks fine when viewing it straight-on or from shallow angles but when you look at it from extreme angles it may appear cloudy or blotchy.
If this is it, then it is a normal effect produced by this particular DuPont paint process where they are going for a tri-coat look but without the additional steps and costs.

I would be interested in seeing a digital photo of your problem if it something that can be captured in photography.

Well heard from GM engineering today via the factory rep who stated the answer to all the clouds in the paint was " That is why they call the color GOLD MIST"...I really have to wonder where they come up with these answers. Starting yesterday we have been recoeving calls from GM survey companies asking why we we responded with negative answers to the numerous surveys we now recieve on a daily basis via phone(Do they think if they continue to survey that we will change our minds?)...WELL DUH!

I'm still trying to get you some answers, this is not my department and so far these guys don't like getting their toes stepped on so they are not being forthright with info or updating the service records.
Sounds like the rep in AZ may have a small ego problem.

Hate to say it; but that whitish (actually more silvery) tinge is perfectly normal and is caused by the mica in this particular paint when viewed at extreme angles (such as the angles that you shot these photos).
Most people like this effect and every Gold Mist paint job has this same look, and if you compare it to others you will find that they are the same.

Now I know why this never got wrote up and filed properly.

Did you not get a chance to see this paint in the daylight before you purchased the Tahoe?
